CODE OF ETHICS

THE DULUTH KENNEL CLUB (DKC) REQUIRES ITS MEMBERS TO ADHERE TO THE

FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WHICH CONSTITUTES ITS CODE OF ETHICS.   THE CLUB ALSO REQUIRES THAT ITS MEMBERS NOT AID OR ABET IN THE VIOLATION OF THESE GUIDELINES BY ANYONE ELSE.

1. All DKC members must adhere to the American Kennel Club’s RULES APPLYING TO REGISTRATION AND DISCIPLINE AND RULES APPLYING TO DOG SHOWS.
2. All DKC members will encourage and promote quality breeding of purebred dogs and doall possible to bring purebred dogs natural qualities to perfection.
3. To consider only the betterment of the breed when breeding a bitch or allowing a breedingto a stud dog and being conscientious of controlling and eliminating inherited problems.
4. No stud dog will be bred to any bitch whose owner is directly or indirectly involved withany puppy broker, puppy mill, pet shop, litter lot sales or any other commercial enterprises whose business is involved in like activities.
5. DKC members will sell each puppy/adult with a written contract signed by all parties.  Thecontract will include:
a. A provision that ensures that the breeder is contacted whenever an owner can nolonger keep a dog at any time during the dog’s life
b. If a DKC member should find themselves unable to physically take back a puppy/adult they will assist their breed club rescue program in the placement of said puppy/adult.
c. Stipulate that the buyer have a veterinary check up within 7 days of the sale to determine that the puppy/adult is healthy.  If the veterinarian determines that the puppy/adult is not in good health, the breeder will, upon return of the puppy/adult refund the purchase price or replace the puppy/adult.
6. DKC members will supply with each puppy/adult:
a. The signed AKC registration papers or transfer papers unless written agreement is made with the buyer that stipulates that such papers are withheld or are to follow.
b. A three (3) generation pedigree
c. Record of inoculations and worming and a recommended schedule to continue.
d. Complete care and feeding instructions with a phone number that breeder can be contacted at with questions.
7. DKC members will not knowingly sell a puppy/adult who is sick nor will DKC members ship or deliver a puppy less than eight (8) weeks of age.
8. DKC members will do limited registration or require the neutering/spaying at the appropriate age of any puppy/adult sold as pet quality.
9. All DKC members will show good sportsmanship at all times and in all matters relating to purebred dogs.
10. DKC members to conduct themselves with the highest degree of honesty and integrity.  A member will not knowingly make a misstatement of fact in any serious discussion or advertisement of any dog, a dog owned by another member or the owner.
11. DKC members will show respect for show sites, overflow facilities and all other aspects of responsible dog ownership, including cleaning up after their dog.
12. A DKC member will do all in his/her power to protect and advance the interest of their breed and to encourage sportsmanlike competition at all dog related events.
